Fabio Carvalho Childhood Story:

For Biography starters, he bears the full name – Fábio Leandro Freitas Gouveia Carvalho.

The Portuguese Baller was born on the 30th day of August 2002 to his Father, Victor Carvalho, and Mother, Freitas Gouveia, in Torres Vedras, Portugal.

A few months after Fábio’s birth, his family moved from Torres Vedras to Chelas. Fabio Carvalho’s Dad sanctioned the move to this new town so he would be close to his extended family members. Many of Fabio Carvalho’s relatives live in Chelas.

Growing Up:

Fabio Carvalho spent the earliest of his childhood years dreaming about football in Chelas. Back then, His family lived in a place called Zona J, in Chelas. This is a Portuguese town located very close to Lisbon, the country’s capital.

He grew up alongside his older brother, someone who never allowed him to wander in the dark alone. Fabio Carvalho also has a sister who is the last-born child of his parents.

The above photo of Fabio Carvalho and his older brother appeared in 2013. That year, the future football star was only eleven years old.

More so, at that time, Fabio Carvalho’s parents (at that time) had both decided to relocate to England from Portugal.

Before the move, little Fabio faced a bad situation in Portugal. He could have died just because he wanted to play football at a certain location.

The quick intervention of a family friend and neighbour saved the boy’s life. Now, let’s tell you what actually happened.

Fabio Carvalho Early Life – Crossing the Dangerous Road:

As a child, football was everything for the little boy. It was impossible for Fabio Carvalho’s parents to keep their son at home. Back then, his family house didn’t have barricades. And the home was situated near a very dangerous road.

Fabio Carvalho’s parents were strict about their children leaving home when they go to their jobs. Victor Carvalho, his Dad, made this house rule for safety and security reasons.

He approved only Fabio Carvalho’s brother (three years his senior) to leave home for football at Olivais Sul. To get to this football location from Zona J, Chelas, one would need to cross a very dangerous road.

The route between the football field and Fabio Carvalho’s family home wasn’t pleasing. His big brother knew the road signs and was mature enough to cross the road to the field (back and forth).

Risking his Life for Football:

When Fabio Carvalho’s parents were away for work, he’d put up a plan. When his brother leaves home, he would first wait for some minutes and then leave home, too.

To reach the nearest football field, a four-year-old Fabio would have to cross the very dangerous road.

Back then, where Fabio Carvalho’s family lived, there was a friendly neighbour. This man warned the youngster never to cross the road again after seeing him do that.

Stubborn Fabio didn’t listen to the neighbour. The next day, he crossed the dangerous road again.

In the name of football, Fábio disobeyed his family’s friend and neighbour. So hungry for football, the youngster ignored all warnings. Crossing the road this time came with a shock. Did you know?… Fabio almost got ran over by a truck.

Noticing that the neighbour and family friend scolded him and then took matters into his hands.

This neighbour reported that near-death experience with Fabio Carvalho’s Father. Just after he heard the news, Victor became very scared for his son’s life.

Fabio Carvalho Family Background:

The Portuguese-born English footballer is not from a rich home. Early on, Fabio Carvalho’s parents could only afford to live Torres Vedras.

This is a historically marginalized area in Portugal. The family later lived a middle-class life in Chelas, a neighbourhood in Lisbon.

Although Fábio grew up in a historically marginalized area, that wasn’t even close to being a problem.

Back then, the real problem was for Victor (Fabio Carvalho’s Dad) to raise money. He needed money to secure his family and children’s future in England.

Fabio Carvalho’s Father (Victor) is a plumber by profession. As a skilled and hardworking blue-collar worker, he was able to make enough savings to make his family leave Portugal.

It happened in 2013 after the Portuguese financial crisis, which almost destroyed the nation.

Fabio Carvalho Family Origin:

Although he plays with the English youth team, there is more to where the Portuguese-born attacking midfielder comes from.

Regarding Fabio Carvalho’s nationality, everyone knows he is Portuguese and British. However, our research reveals he has four nationalities.

Truth be told, Fabio Carvalho’s ancestry has nothing to do with Portugal and England. This is because his parents are neither from the above-mentioned countries.

We’ll use this section of Fabio Carvalho’s biography to explain his origin. Let’s begin with Victor, his Dad.

Fabio Carvalho’s Father Origin:

The Footballer’s Dad (Victor) is from Angola. Portuguese Superstars William Carvalho and Helder Costa also have roots in Angola. This is a Southern African nation colonized by the Portuguese Empire almost 400 years ago.

By implication, Fabio Carvalho is an Angolan citizen through his Dad. In case you didn’t know, this is where Angola is located in Africa.

Fabio Carvalho's Father is from Angola.
Fabio Carvalho’s Father is from Angola.

Just like Fabio, there are many top footballers whose parents (either Mum and/or Dad) have Angolan roots.

Those we have written their Biography include Nuno Mendes, Rafael Leao, Helder Costa, Eduardo Camavinga, Florentino Luis, and Blaise Matuidi.

Fabio Carvalho’s Mother Origin:

Have you heard of an Island called Madeira on the northwest coast of Africa? If Yes, then it means you know Fabio Carvalho’s Mother’s country.

As pictured here, Madeira Island is an archipelago situated in the North Atlantic Ocean – about 1,076 km from Portugal.

Fabio Carvalho's Mother is from Madeira Islands.

Both Angola and Madeira (where Fabio Carvalho’s parents come from) were colonized by Portugal. And did you also know?…  Funchal, a city on Madeira Island, is Cristiano Ronaldo’s birthplace. Again, we trace the ancestry of the football GOAT to Cape Verde.

Fabio Carvalho Education:

When the time got right, Victor and his wife ensured their two sons and daughters attended school. For Fabio, getting an education was very important – just like football. His parents saw it as a second option in case his football career didn’t work out.

While Fabio Carvalho’s family stayed in Portugal, he attended a school not so close to Benfica.

Shuttling between the school and the club’s academy was very expensive. As a result, Fabio Carvalho’s parents requested a transport service from the club.

Messrs Miguel Soares and Fonte Santa, two Benfica staff, took care of everything. They (for three years) made sure he got adequate transport to his school and back to the football academy. To this day, Fabio Carvalho’s family remains very grateful to these good men.

When his family moved to London, Fabio continued schooling. Accepting advice from his Father, he continued football at his London school. Later, an academy accepted him. We’ll deliver a Football Story in further sections of Fabio Carvalho’s Biography.

Career Buildup:

Zona J, in Chelas, was where Fabio Carvalho’s family lived in Portugal. In that environment, he laid his football foundation. Young Fabio was more dedicated than children of his age group. He was also more talented than every kid of his age at Zona J, in Chelas.

In his Zona J neighbourhood, kids often go on vacations. Fabio Carvalho’s dad had other commitments and wasn’t rich enough to take his family on holidays abroad.

Little Fabio understood his family’s situation. He just kept on playing football – with older kids.

At that time, games at Zona J, in Chelas, had no age limits. Street football was noticeable in the way Fabio played.

He had the freedom to roam all corners of the field and do one-on-one dribbles. Playing this way made him very creative, as you have observed in his game.

Fabio Carvalho Biography – Football Story:

The youngster wanted something formal, like belonging to a team. Playing street football at Zona J, in Chelas, wasn’t satisfying. This was why Fabio Carvalho risked his life by crossing that dangerous road.

Did you know?… The formal football foundation of Fabio Carvalho was first laid in that field whose access put his life in danger.

Right there in Olivais Sul, where that football field is located, Fabio began his football career on solid footings.

In case you are not aware, it was in this field that Benfica discovered Fabio. Igor Santos and his technical team scouted him at Olivais Sul. This football scout who found Fabio often referred to him as a “Rare Diamond and a Magician”.

Igor Santos confessed that he saw him play like a magician in a game at Olivais Sul. He also noticed that Fabio played in his brother’s team against boys who were two or three years older than him.

At the time of discovery, little Fabio, one of the smallest kids, had just helped his team win the trophy above. The news that he would join the academy of one of Portugal’s biggest clubs elated Fabio Carvalho’s family. At this time, everyone knew he would be great.

Benfica Story:

From his family’s hometown of Chelas to his new academy, little Fabio carried the same football magic. He joined Benfica in 2010 at the tender age of seven. Little Fabio, upon joining the Eagles academy, showed everyone his true behaviour.

Every member of the club, including his coaches, noticed something. That Fabio was very quiet and introverted. Still, he was the most intelligent footballer among all of his academy teammates. Speaking of his teammates, one of them is Paulo Bernardo.

Can you spot Fabio Carvalho?... He is the first person standing, left alongside Paulo Bernardo, his best friend at the Benfica academy.

At Benfica, little Fabio was the most attentive. He replicated every single teaching from his coach. When he plays competitive matches in the field, the animal in him comes out. Meanwhile, in real life, Fabio (just like Caoimhin Kelleher) becomes an extrovert.

Becoming an extrovert on the pitch brought out his competitive persona. Fabio’s excellent dribbling ability made him different from others. Benfica could not afford to lose him. So they granted Fabio Carvalho’s parents’ request to settle his school transportation needs.

Even with the help, Benfica’s star boy could not stay longer. Fabio Carvalho’s Father could not bear the heat of Portugal’s financial crisis. Victor Carvalho sought a way forward. The only thing that could deliver a better future was moving his family to England.

Fabio Carvalho Bio – Road to Fame Story:

In 2013, Portugal went through a tough financial crisis. Their economy crumbled, and it forced them to seek foreign help. Sadly, Portugal’s poor and middle-class households were most affected. Fabio Carvalho’s family were among those that felt the heat of the crisis.

This is the reason the youngster left Benfica behind. He followed his parents abroad in search of a better life. Victor Carvalho looked to England.

He once confessed that it was the best decision he had made in his life. A decision that guaranteed the future of his children.

Fabio Carvalho’s Early Life in England:

In the United Kingdom, London was the best place to live. Fabio Carvalho’s family found a home at Elephant and Castle in the London Borough of Southwark.

This was where they started life all over with hopes for more job opportunities and a better football future.

In London, Fabio Carvalho’s Father (Victor), got better pay in his plumbing occupation. And adaptation became easy for his Mum, big brother, and little sister. Having arrived in the UK, education came first. And Fábio Carvalho started by playing football only at school.

While at his London school, a particular teacher took a likeness on Fabio. He liked him because the boy was intelligent and was also the best footballer in the school.

The teacher wanted the best for Fabio. So, one day, he took him to a training game at Fulham.

The Fulham trip between Fabio and his teacher proved unsuccessful. The teacher got really upset because the academy didn’t call Fabio to see the talent he had.

Sadly, Fabio and his teacher went back to his school, where he continued playing his football.

Days later, the teacher requested a meeting with Fabio Carvalho’s parents. He stressed the need for value to be added to their son’s footballing abilities. And that could only happen when they find a football academy. He also explains to them the disappointing Fulham trip.

Early Life with Balham FC:

The teacher spoke with Victor Carvalho about the need to take his son to an academy that’ll easily accept him.

The best recommendation was Balham FC. Following a successful trial, little Fabio enrolled at the academy, which was established in 2011.

At the newly set up little academy, everything went as planned. Fabio Carvalho’s Father was convinced that his son was taking the best step to continuing his football career.

The youngster was ten years old but appeared in the training session of Balham’s under-11s.

Greg Cruttwell, president of Balham FC, was the most excited to have little Fabio in his academy.

And in an instant, all his trainers’ eyes glowed with the diamond before them. Fabio’s coaches were speechless after observing him do wonders with the ball.

Confessing his quality, one of Fabio Carvalho’s trainers said,

After 30 seconds of the first training, we threw a ball at him from 25 meters. Fabio returned it with ease.

I then looked at my colleague. We were dumbfounded and couldn’t say anything.

Little Fabio had an incredible workout. The boy had posture, technical quality, and balance.

Bringing Success to Balham:

Less than a year after joining the academy, Fabio’s popularity had grown out of proportion. Truth be told, Balham started to become very small for the youngster’s talent. Just after he helped his team win this trophy, the boy’s name exploded all over England.

Winning this tournament was the turning point in the youngster's career.
Winning this tournament was the turning point in the youngster’s career.

2014 was a great year for Balham’s founder and chairman, Gregg Cruttwell. He had the joyful task of listening to pleas from several top Premier League clubs about Fabio.

Fulham, Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal, and Liverpool all wanted Balham’s most prized possession.

I had already been contacted by Fulham before Fabio played the tournament. But after that tournament, I started to get a lot of calls from Chelsea and other top England clubs.

Cruttwell, the owner of Balham FC, told Sky Sports in an interview.

Fabio Carvalho Biography – More Success Stories:

As his name continue to spread, Balham (who wanted business) knew it was impossible to keep their diamond. Chelsea had the greatest push to capture the youngster. The club invited Fabio Carvalho’s family to their training centre.

Also desperate to have him was Manchester United. The club sent representatives to the country’s capital to meet the parents of the boy wonder.

While Arsenal and Liverpool seek meetings to know their position regarding the attacking midfielder’s future.

Why Fabio Carvalho’s Dad chose Fulham:

Taking their son to Chelsea was like going on holiday to Disneyland, says Balham’s founder Gregg Cruttwell.

After meeting with Fabio Carvalho’s parents, Chelsea rejected their offer to guarantee school and transport for their son. That was the reason he didn’t join the club.

Fulham noticed that Victor Carvalho had rejected Chelsea’s because of his son’s education. The club took that opportunity to make transport service available for Fabio.

It didn’t end there. Fulham academy pledged to give Fabio pocket monies of 300 pounds per month.

Fulham Rise:

Did you know?… Little Fabio was eleven years old at that time and barely spoke a word of English. That didn’t border him as he only made his feet do the talking.

Fabio continued to use his street wisdom to excel at Fulham’s academy. The rough edges of schoolboy footballing also helped. Six years later, and to the joy of his family, he signed his first professional contract with Fulham – a two-year deal.

Carvalho’s start to his senior career saw him maintaining his meteoric rise. Just like Michael Olise did, the attacking midfielder exploded the Championship with his goals and assists.

He, alongside Harry Wilson and Alexander Mitrovic, were instrumental in helping Fulham get back to the 2022/2023 Premier League. Here is a video of Fabio’s Fulham Rise.

The Portuguese whizkid became too big for his Fulham boots. The need to go prove himself elsewhere made him refuse a contract extension with Fulham. By rejecting a Fulham contract offer, Fabio became labelled as the Wonderkid who has Europe’s elite on alert.

At the time of writing Fabio Carvalho’s Biography, he has just rejected a Liverpool deal. Just like Armando Broja and Brenden Aaronson, Fabio is likely to get a big career move in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Life indeed is truly unpredictable, and it is a long lesson in humility. The Biography of Fabio Carvalho teaches every aspiring football not to give up.
