Caoimhin Kelleher got educated at the Presentation Brothers College.

Back then at the Presentation Brothers College, the major sports were rugby and rowing. Although Kelleher tried these sports, his major focus was football. The youngster took football a bit more seriously than other sports.

Caoimhin’s schooling days had some good football memories. The best one was helping his team win the college cup final, beating local rivals, the Christian Brothers.

Career Buildup:

Caoimhin Kelleher began playing football way back before his teenage days. Back then, everyone knew him for being the most quiet person among his teammates. These were the words of his friend, Cotten;

“He’d say nothing for 10 minutes then suddenly he’d kill you with a one-liner out of nowhere.”

Those days, quite a few of the lads (especially his teammates) looked up to Caoimhin. Not only because of his football abilities but because of the way he handled himself.

Cotter, his friend, thinks Kelleher took football a bit more seriously. This is because he knew (inwardly), that he was better than everyone else.

For many who played with him, if they lost, they lost. They saw losing a game as normal. This wasn’t the case with Caoimhin.

Similar to Jules Kounde (in his early days), the future Liverpool star was a perfectionist. He was desperate to win and hated it whenever his team lost a match. Kelleher was a quiet person, but you could sense it if he wasn’t happy with something.

Caoimhin Kelleher Biography – Early Career Life:

With the support of his hometown club and sporting family, the youngster had the right environment to realise the BIG dream of becoming a professional footballer. In his words,

“I always believed in myself and I always had confidence in myself. I believed I was good enough to go professional.”

Caoimhin Kelleher began his football career with Ringmahon Rangers. This is an academy where he earlier shined as a striker.

The boy’s determination to succeed was unreal. Back then, little Caoimhin didn’t just have talent. He wanted everything to be perfect.

Having that mentality of refusing to accept poor standards led to his early success with Ringmahon Rangers.

To the joy of Caoimhin Kelleher’s family, their very own won the U10 Player of the Year Award for the academy. Cork City’s Gearoid presented the award to him.

The most interesting thing about Caoimhin Kelleher’s Biography is one fact that he wasn’t an ordinary striker.

Several interviews with persons who know him have said he scored between 20 and 30 goals per season. Now, that tells you how important Kelleher was.

He played like Mohamed Salah in his Early Years:

Similar to the Egyptian King, you’ll notice his calmness before games. Then suddenly, his explosiveness comes when the games begin.

Back then, Caoimhin Kelleher’s burst of speed and acceleration, including his knack for scoring goals, resembles that of Mohamed Salah.

Scoring between 20 to 30 goals per season was no fluke. In Caoimhin Kelleher’s wildest dreams, he never believed that one day, he would switch permanently to a goalkeeper.

Yes, it actually happened and we’ll use the next section to tell you how he became a goalkeeper.

Caoimhin Kelleher Bio – Road to Fame Story:

The Striker was due to appear in a national competition called the Kennedy Cup. As a center-forward, he ended up going as a Goalkeeper.

Truth be told, there was no sign that Kelleher was interested in playing as a keeper. Now, let’s tell you what happened.

What led to Caoimhin Kelleher’s Conversion to a Goalkeeper?

Ringmahon Rangers started the season with Robbie O’Leary in goal. This goalkeeper was younger than everyone else. He didn’t enjoy playing with older boys.

Two games a week and training was too much for him. Suddenly, the Goalie gave up playing for the team.

When he left, the club became faced with a difficult situation. The academy knew that finding a new goalkeeper wasn’t going to be easy.

Ray Kelleher, Caoimhin’s father, got aware of the situation and called the coach. In the words of the coach;

“I was sitting in the car one night after training. This was a day I’ll never forget. Ray called and said to me, ‘Will you put Caoimhin in goal?’ I was reluctant because Caoimhin was Ringmahon Rangers’ best striker.

After the request, I had a chat with the other coaches about the idea. We were all very reluctant. It was a bit mad and I (in the end) said this to Caoimhin Kelleher’s Dad…

‘Look, Ray, we’re not sure exactly whether it’s the right decision. But l will go with it. We’ll throw him in and see how he performs…’”

Ultimately, Ray Kelleher took a chance. He told the coach afterwards that he’d never have made this request if his young Goalkeeper, Robbie, carried on with the team. He further said he felt pity for the team after their only goalkeeper refused to play.

When his teammates found out:

The team’s most important central midfielder (Cotter) reached the changing rooms before the next game against Springfield Ramblers.

Immediately, he found out about the decision to move Kelleher to the goal post. Cotter was shocked as he could not believe it.

As one of Ringmahon Rangers’ best central midfielders, he was immediately concerned.

Cotter feared that he might not have someone higher up in the pitch with the ability to make his passes and goal assist look good. In Cotter’s words;

“I got shocked with the decision. Caoimhin was our leading scorer.

I was thinking of the decision, saying…,‘How on earth is this going to work out?’

It seemed crazy. He was the best striker in the whole of Cork’s youth. suddenly he was taking a step back.

How wind caused Caoimhin Kelleher’s first game, Goalkeeper defeat:

Only the N40 motorway separates the home of Ringmahon Rangers from the sea inlet. This caused an issue of strong winds blowing across the pitches. This wind sometimes continues for the whole of a football season. It disturbs the players and times, and causes bizarre goals.

Ringmahon Rangers’ goalkeeping coach warned Caoimhin Kelleher to be aware of the issue. Next, came Kelleher’s first competitive fixture in goal. Sadly, his first match as a goalkeeper didn’t quite go according to plan.

On the day of his first match, the wind made the ball move in a strange direction. That made Kelleher not to saving a particular shot, leading to his team’s 1-0 defeat. It was disastrous for the youngster who never wanted to lose his first match.

Truth be told, the goal that led to his first-ever defeat as a goalkeeper wasn’t his fault. Cotter, the midfielder and friend, remembers Caoimhin Kelleher’s parents looking at one another when that happened. The expression on Ray and Jacqueline’s face reads;

“What are you doing son? you are not supposed to allow a goal go in on your first match…”

Thanks to Kelleher’s personality, he responded well to his first defeat as a goalkeeper. The Boy did not let it affect him. His performance in the next matches after that defeat was excellent.

A few months later, everyone changed their mind about him. Caoimhin Kelleher’s parents, this time justified their decision on have their son become a goalkeeper. Everyone accepted that the boy was destined to be a Goalie.

How good was Caoimhin Kelleher – as a Goalkeeper:

Ringmahon Rangers had a better team with him at the goal post. Everyone relied on Caoimhin to save goals. If the other team got past their defence, fans knew that the opponent still had to get past Caoimhin. For every 10 goal attempt, he did save at least 9.

The new Goalkeeper became used to saving his team from defeats. When he was a centre-forward, his team would be 2-0 down and Caoimhin Kelleher would score a hat-trick in the second half. Now that he was in goal, he loved making flying saves to prevent any goal.

Kelleher became this rare goalkeeper. Ireland had a few goalkeepers in the league who were getting trials in England. Stars who had gone to play for Ireland. The competition was fierce. But within a couple of years, Caoimhin Kelleher was above all Ireland goalkeepers.

Caoimhin Kelleher was already tall. He had the build for a goalkeeper. What helped Kell was the fact that he understood what a good striker might do to score. This is simply because he was a former striker himself. He knows where a striker would go to take their shot.

How Caoimhin Kelleher joined Liverpool:

A host of English clubs fought for his signature. Among them was Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa. It was this time that Caoimhin Kelleher’s parents got the great news that their son had been called to be the goalkeeper for the Republic of Ireland U17.

As regards his transfer, a Manchester City scout in Cork first recommended Kelleher to his club. Sadly, City didn’t respond, and no move was made. So when Caoimhin Kelleher impressed with Ireland’s youth, another City scout wondered why he wasn’t on their radar.

At the time, Man United had tried to get the goalkeeper, but they were too late. Kelleher rejected moves to Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa. And it was too late for Man City, who failed to act early. At that time, the almighty Liverpool had pounced on the boy.

Caoimhin Kelleher Biography – Liverpool Success Story:

The Youngster could not make any transfer move until after his 16th birthday. Kelleher did not leave for Merseyside until the end of the school year. Liverpool told him to see out the remainder of his final season with Ringmahon Rangers – which had a fitting finale.

In Caoimhin Kelleher’s last ever game for Ringmahon Rangers, the young Goalkeeper did the unthinkable. His goalkeeping heroics helped his teammates win the junior leagues in Cork. Truly, that was a great way to finish his time at Ringmahon Rovers.

Did you know?… Caoimhin Kelleher joined Liverpool just two and a half years after he switched to become a goalkeeper. That dream move to his dream club happened just after his 16th birthday. Portuguese goalkeeper (Rui Patricio) shares a similar story.

Life with the Reds Academy:

Caoimhin Kelleher stayed at the Liverpool FC Academy for your years before he made his debut for the first team in September 2019. During this time, he had gone on to represent the Republic of Ireland at U21.

Challenging Jurgen Klopp:

When Klopp told Kelleher that he won’t be playing yet with his first team, he never expected the boy’s reaction. The Goalie first told Klopp he accepted the decision, but that doesn’t mean he was happy with it. Then, young Kelleher questioned his manager.

Kelleher demanded answers as to why he cannot be a Liverpool second choice goalkeeper. As to why he can’t be the person behind Brazilian Alison Becker. That question made Klopp realise he was dealing with a very serious personality.

Truth be told, to be Liverpool’s goalkeeper, you need to be stubborn inside, be bold and have that big personality. Following Alisson’s injury and a number of errors from backup Adrian, Kelleher got the opportunity he deserved to prove himself as number two.

Cementing his Position:

After a handful of stunning saves, Kelleher became Jurgen Klopp’s second choice on a more regular basis.

The Liverpool boss confessed that it was his “natural footballing ability” which saw Caoimhin Kelleher selected over the more experienced Adrian.

When Klopp gave the Goalie his Champions League debut, the whole of Cork, even people who weren’t Liverpool fans before, began supporting the club.

On the 1st day of December 2020, Kelleher kept a clean sheet in a victory against Ajax in the Champions League.

What a fairytale start to his European football life. In winning that Champions League match, Caoimhin Kelleher became the 12th Irish footballer to do so. More so, the first Goalkeeper to achieve it in over a decade.

Winning the EFL Cup:

That special day, the 24th of June 2021, a new long-term deal with Liverpool cemented Caoimhin Kelleher’s position as Alisson’s Number two. The new contract was a reward for progress made in previous seasons.

Kelleher alongside other Liverpool youngsters – the likes of Rys Williams, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones got a regular selection to the 2022 EFL Cup. They joined the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Konstantinos Tsimikas, who had already begun making big hits on Merseyside.

The 27th day of February 2022 is a day Caoimhin Kelleher’s family would never forget. On that day, he started in the 2022 EFL Cup Final and Chelsea. Did you know?… Kelleher scored the decisive penalty in the 11–10 penalty shoot-out win against Kepa’s Chelsea.

In public, Caoimhin Kelleher appears very quiet. But with the lads and his own friends, he becomes a bit of a messier and also a good joker too.

This remains the reason why it was easier to coach him from scratch (as a Goalie) because the youngster has no bad habits.

Thanks to a proper upbringing by Caoimhin Kelleher’s parents, his determination to succeed has remained unreal.

He has the talent and still strives to be a perfectionist. If he makes a mistake on goal, he will remember it forever and make sure he fixes it next time.

Perhaps a sad story is the fact that Ray never lived to see his son’s success at Liverpool. Caoimhin Kelleher’s Dad left the world just a year before his son’s transfer to Liverpool. Ray also died barely a year after his influence helped convert his son to a goalkeeper.

Before his untimely death, Ray Kelleher loved watching movies. As revealed by Fiacre Kelleher (Caoimhin’s brother), his Dad’s favourite movie was The Shawshank Redemption. Ray liked the storyline behind it. And he felt nobody could beat Morgan Freeman as an actor.

The above film is a 1994 crime drama about Andy Dufresne, a successful banker. He was arrested for the murders of his wife and her lover and then sentenced to life imprisonment. At the Shawshank prison, this man becomes the most unconventional prisoner.

Meet Fiacre Kelleher. You could tell from his cute face that he is Caoimhín Kelleher’s Brother.

He is Caoimhin’s immediate older brother. Born on the 10th March 1996, Fiacre Blane Kelleher is an Irish professional footballer. He is a product of Celtic academy. Fiacre started out with Avondale (in Cork, Ireland). As of 2022, he plays as a Defender for Bradford City.

Speaking of his Greatest influence, Fiacre Kelleher often points to his older brothers. He looked up a lot to them (and his late Dad) while he was growing up. Did you know?… Fiacre Kelleher started out playing Hurling. He later quit after taking likeness to football.

About Olan Kelleher:

A Hurling star by profession, he is Caoimhín’s oldest brother. Olan is a school teacher who (at the turn of the new millennium) learned his hurling trade at the Blackrock club in Cork.

Olan is a Blackrock hurling legend. In the course of his career, Caoimhín’s big brother secured two All-Ireland titles with Cork at Junior. Two years after losing their father (Ray), Olan Kelleher took up a teaching job at Rush National Primary School – in the year 2016.

In November 2019, Caomhin Kelleher went to see his older brother Olan play in the Cork Intermediate Championship Final in Pairc Ui Rinn. Olan Kelleher was on top form that day.

Unlike his little brother, who won the Champions League with Liverpool, Olan, for his part, is a little down the road in his hurling career. His Blackrock win over Cloughduv was Caomhin Kelleher’s brother’s third championship medal in as many years.

About Tim Kelleher:

A fine Scratch Golfer by profession, he is one of the older brothers of Caoimhín Kelleher. The search term, Tim Kelleher Cork hurler, often comes with misconception. The truth is, there are other Hurlers (retired and active) in Cork City who bear the name Tim Kelleher.

It is important to note that Tim (the brother of Caoimhin Kelleher’) is not a family relative of Irish former sportsperson Timothy M. Kelleher (born 20 June 1970). Neither is he related to Rónan Kelleher, whose father (Tim) was a hurler in Cork.
