The Spurs Involvement and Injury Torment:

The big moment finally came for Ryan Mason. It came in September at a time his team were losing 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup.

Ryan Mason was called up after 65 minutes, which he thought probably raised a few eyebrows.

Shockingly, within seven minutes he scored his first goal for Spurs who won 3-1. This was a turning point for him at the London club. Mind you, this was a team comprising of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Kieran Trippier etc.

A few days later, Mason started my first Premier League match – away to Arsenal. From there, everything began to play out well.

To the joy of Ryan Mason’s parents, he got called by England to make his national debut he this Spurs wonder goal.

For the first five or six games of 2015/16, Mason really felt he has been Spurs’ best player.

The midfielder got another England call-up in September, although he didn’t play because of injury. Poor Mason got sidelined for weeks to allow him to recover.

After recovering from injury, he was so eager to get back but he mistakingly forced himself a bit too much. Sadly, Mason broke down in a rehab session which set him back again with another injury. This time, for several more weeks.

During his recovery, he began participating in training – with the injury. It hurt him so bad that Mason couldn’t have a hot bath.

If he did, his knee would swell right up. He managed to play a few matches. In one of his Chelsea games, Mason injured his ankle and was out for two months.

The decision to leave Spurs:

Sadly at the time Ryan Mason got fit, he couldn’t force his way back into the team. At that time, Spurs were in a title race and Mousa Dembele (the Belgian) was in unbelievable form. Tottenham’s starting XI picked itself, and Mason could have no arguments about being on the bench.

Early that summer, a handful of clubs came in for him. Ryan Mason turned them all down because he was determined to fight for my place at Tottenham. Mauricio Pochettino said he would get my chance, and he wanted him to stay.

In the next season, things didn’t get improved and Mason decided to hold talked with his agent about his future. Speaking about the decision he made, Mason once said;

 I felt that, at 25, I really needed to be playing regularly.

After much thinking, i agreed to go to Hull for the season and then, hopefully, get a move elsewhere – maybe even back to Tottenham.

That was just my own way of thinking. I felt It’s a short career and sometimes you need to be a bit selfish.

Ryan Mason Bio – Hull Story:

For the ambitious England man, playing with Hull City was very different to Spurs. The truth is, the club didn’t suit the way he plays.

Mason was told I’d play as a No.10, but after the first two games, he was moved back into a deeper role. It took a while before he adapted.

As soon as Marco Silva came in, everything changed. The team began playing the way I’d been expecting them to play. The four games I played under the new coach were probably his four best matches for Hull.

Ryan Mason was starting to feel like I’d be able to prove myself again. In fact, he was very optimistic about my future.

Ryan Mason Injury Story – The Untold Biography:

On a blessed day, he and his team followed the normal routine for an away game to Chelsea FC.

The match was supposed to be on a Sunday afternoon game, so Mason and his team travelled down on a Saturday. They spent the night before the match at a hotel near the stadium.

In the morning, Mason and his teammates went for a walk along the Thames to loosen up a bit. They had their pre-match meal, a little rest, and then got ready to go to Stamford Bridge.

The Hull City player made sure he left two tickets for my mum and dad (Lisa and Glen) at the ticket office. According to Mason,

I remember looking at the tickets, ensuring that they were in the front row of the stadium’s Hull end. I felt it would be amazing to run over my parents if I scored.

The game started positively for Hull, and Ryan Mason was up battling very well against N’Golo Kante.

There were a few crunching tackles, 50-50s. Behold in 13 minutes of the match, Ryan Mason’s head injury (that forced him to retire from football) happened. Giving the account of the skull injury caused by Gary Cahill, Mason once said;

They had a corner and the ball came in. I jumped to head it clear, and suddenly, I felt this big force crashing through my skull.

It was the worst pain imaginable. it was like a bomb going off in my head, right on the temple. I have ever witnessed that before.

How a Doctor saved his life:

In no time, the whole of Ryan Mason’s body went into a natural state of panic because his skull was badly hurt. Hull City’s club Doctor Mark Waller made some big decisions that saved his life.

The Doctor knew straight away that Mason had fractured his skull, and there was potential for brain damage. In fact, his whole right side of Ryan Mason’s face had dropped and was paralysed.

The ambulance driver wanted to go to the nearest hospital, but Hull City’s club doctor Mark Waller said they must go to St Mary’s. The ambulance carrying Mason actually drove past two other hospitals before getting there.

Did you know?… That decision made by Doctor Mark Waller saved my life. If Ryan Mason had gone to one of the nearer hospitals, I’d have probably had a scan and then been referred to St Mary. That would definitely be a waste of valuable time since his life was at risk.

The Outcome of Ryan Mason’s Head Injury:

Few seconds after he reached the hospital, Mason went into surgery. He was operated on for 61 minutes after the hospital. At the time Mason woke up, everything was a bit of a blur. He could remember feeling a lot of pain.

There was so much noise that the nurses had to move him into a private room. Mason developed a health issue of not being able to handle sound.

They made him sit in complete silence because any little noise was just too much for his head. He said this;

Even the nurses whispering in the hallways felt like they were screaming straight into my ear. I was so sensitive to noise.

I was sleeping for probably 21-22 hours a day. The nurses would wake me up to do a few tests, check my blood pressure and so on, but most of the time I just had to sleep.

I knew I had staples and metal plates in my head, though it wasn’t really until about six months later that the doctors sat me down to explain exactly what they had done.

In total, Ryan Mason had 14 metal plates in my skull, with 28 screws that held them in place. There were around 45 staples and a long six-inch scar across his head. Seeing the Doctors pick the staples from his head wasn’t pleasant.

The Painful Recovery:

The skull injury caused constant headaches and a rush of pressure to that side of his head. Also, all the nerves down the side of his face were damaged.

For a while, he witnessed his nerve endings re-connecting, and that felt like pins and needles piercing through his body.

At the time Ryan Mason’s muscles connected to his jaw, he had no chance of opening his mouth for about ten weeks. During that time, he was being spoon-fed. It wasn’t until more than two months that he was able to open his mouth properly.

The first time, Ryan Mason was able to pick up a glass of orange juice, hold it to his mouth and drink it. That brought in a massive joy to his heart.

According to family sources, he even filmed it. During that time, couldn’t work straight, and that made him constantly visit a balance specialist – for 12 weeks before he recovered himself in that aspect.

The first three months after the injury was by far the worst for Ryan Mason. It was just so full of constant challenges. Giving the account of what he felt at this time, the future Spurs coach said;

First, it was me not able to sit up in bed. It was a big challenge emotionally, not just for me but also for my family.

My wife would be at home and because my body didn’t need noise, there was no lights and no TV for about eight or nine weeks.

I sit in a near-silence on the sofa for most of the day. If my wife needed a break, my mum would come round and take her place.

The Beginning of the End (Career):

At each time he sees the doctor, Mason asks if he had the chance to play football. They’d say, No, that it’s not a good idea to play football again.

The whole response felt like a knife pierced into his heart. According to Mason, it was probably worse for my family to hear that.

In a funny way, the fact he was a footballer actually helped me to get through the recovery process. Ryan Mason saw it as a challenge to overcome in the same way I had done throughout my career.

It was just a case of him moving forward, one step at a time, and finding a way of making his recovery all work.

A few months later, an optimistic Ryan Mason began thinking about playing again. He travelled up to Hull to see his teammates.

At the club, the physio had him kicking a ball against a wall – just like he did when I was a kid. Did you know?… That was the first time he kicked a ball in about five months.

Half a year later, Ryan Mason convinced himself that I was a few weeks away from playing for Hull City’s first team again. He was said in an interview;

I thought that I could get back in the team, play a few months in the Championship and then hopefully go back to the Premier League this summer.

That was where my mind was at. But I went for a scan in the next month and the news I got changed everything.

The End of Ryan Mason’s Football Career:

During the scan, the focus was almost entirely on his skull. Doctors found out that there were holes that needed repairing and fractures that needed to fuse.

To make matters worst, Ryan Mason’s last scan showed some issues with his brain.

The footballer spoke with some neurosurgeons and specialists, and they outlined the painful fact to his ear.

The medical professionals made it clear about what could happen to him if he started playing football again. According to Mason;

They said if I went back and start heading balls, there was a chance I could get dementia or epilepsy by the time I was 28 or 29. They said it was a miracle that I’d recovered so far and playing again could do more damage.

By the time he left the hospital, Mason knew he was retiring. That news titled (Hull City’s Ryan Mason, 26, retires) was devastating to hear.

The dreams to play in the Premier League, or captain his boyhood team (Spurs), or play for England just ended.

Ryan Mason Bio – The Rise to Fame Story:

After retirement, Mason began to find the thing he would be passionate about. Something he can dedicate himself to 100% – just like he did with football.

Thanks to some help from an old friend Mauricio Pochettino, Mason joined the coaching staff of Tottenham Hotspur in April 2018.

In February 2019, he (owing to his injury experience) began advocating that Heading should be banned for children.

Mason spoke with BBC that Heading in football might not exist in 10-15 years (for tender ages) if precautions are not taken. This act gave a huge justification for the premier league’s concussion substitute.

In the year 2020, Ryan Mason was made the official academy coach for the Under-19 UEFA Youth League side. Twelve months later, he was made the head of Spurs (U17 to U23) player development.

On 19 April 2021, following the dismissal of Spurs head coach José Mourinho, Mason was named interim head coach of Tottenham Hotspur until the end of the season. That news saw the young manager breaking some unbelievable records.
