The decision to leave Spurs:

Sadly at the time Ryan Mason got fit, he couldn’t force his way back into the team. At that time, Spurs were in a title race and Mousa Dembele (the Belgian) was in unbelievable form. Tottenham’s starting XI picked itself, and Mason could have no arguments about being on the bench.

There was so much noise that the nurses had to move him into a private room. Mason developed a health issue of not being able to handle sound.

They made him sit in complete silence because any little noise was just too much for his head. He said this;

Even the nurses whispering in the hallways felt like they were screaming straight into my ear. I was so sensitive to noise.

I was sleeping for probably 21-22 hours a day. The nurses would wake me up to do a few tests, check my blood pressure and so on, but most of the time I just had to sleep.

I knew I had staples and metal plates in my head, though it wasn’t really until about six months later that the doctors sat me down to explain exactly what they had done.

In total, Ryan Mason had 14 metal plates in my skull, with 28 screws that held them in place. There were around 45 staples and a long six-inch scar across his head. Seeing the Doctors pick the staples from his head wasn’t pleasant.

The Painful Recovery:

The skull injury caused constant headaches and a rush of pressure to that side of his head. Also, all the nerves down the side of his face were damaged.

For a while, he witnessed his nerve endings re-connecting, and that felt like pins and needles piercing through his body.

At the time Ryan Mason’s muscles connected to his jaw, he had no chance of opening his mouth for about ten weeks. During that time, he was being spoon-fed. It wasn’t until more than two months that he was able to open his mouth properly.

A few months later, an optimistic Ryan Mason began thinking about playing again. He travelled up to Hull to see his teammates.

The footballer spoke with some neurosurgeons and specialists, and they outlined the painful fact to his ear.

The medical professionals made it clear about what could happen to him if he started playing football again. According to Mason;

They said if I went back and start heading balls, there was a chance I could get dementia or epilepsy by the time I was 28 or 29. They said it was a miracle that I’d recovered so far and playing again could do more damage.
