As DailyMail puts it, Roberto Firmino’s mother reveals she banned her son from leaving his home as a child. This wa because she feared he would get involved with notorious gangs in his area. She feared the streets were too dangerous.
She said: “I didn’t want Roberto to go out and play because it was very dangerous on the streets.
He was only allowed to accompany his father and stay close to him while doing his water business. José Roberto Cordeiro sold bottles of water on the streets of Maceio.
Roberto Firmino Early Years:
In the beginning, little monies earned kept Firmino’s family and helped them on feeding and survival. His son wasn’t interested in the business, but only in football.
Young Roberto found a way to get his football fix, sneaking out from their fenced home by using his own special key to get past the gates.
His mother, Mariana, added:
“He would get up very early while I was sleeping to play football, make as little noise as possible and jump over the wall.”
Ideally, Firmino was a product of hardship. At the tender age of 8, he had already thought of ways to get out of poverty.
His parents knew caging him at home would decrease the opportunities he would get to be successful.
They offered him the freedom to play only football in the streets, thanks to neighbours who said …
“Let him go, he’s born with the talent, his success is an opportunity for us to get out of poverty and misery”

Roberto Firmino Biography – Leaving the Street:
With the help of Luiz, a coach at his local club CRB, Roberto Firmino escaped the slum aged 14.
Luiz said: “Roberto’s family was very poor and humble. He would play in his bare feet. When he first came to the club, his father was unemployed.
He only managed his small business to feed his family. So I paid the boy’s travel and expenses, helped with his kit and took him to games.
He was a tall lanky, and quiet kid but streetwise. I’ve seen youngsters drawn into drug trafficking and robbing cars. I knew he didn’t do any of these.
Luiz continued…“Within the first few minutes of him being on the field, I knew he was going to be a star. I cried when I heard they had called him to play for Brazil.
I’ve felt so proud of him, to see that he has fulfilled what I dreamed of and what he dreamed of.
He always said to me it was his dream to become one of Brazil’s best footballers.”
At 16, Roberto signed for Tombense, 1,600 miles from home. They then sent him out on loan to second-division side Figueirense, 1,000 miles further south.
His mum said nature riddled Roberto with homesickness — which caused lots of distress for his family
She said: “He called me many times desperate to come home. ‘Mum, come and get me I can’t take this anymore!.
All the family cried, and he cried, but we didn’t have the money to bring him home.
Firmino could only have to wait for months until he had earned much monies to visit home. He spent the little he had on accommodation and feeding.’
