Mesut Ozil Childhood Story – Early Life:

The Legendary soccer star, Mesut Özil, was born on October 15, 1988, in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, to Mustafa Özil (father) and Gulizar Özil (mother). Mesut was born as the last child among four children.

More importantly, he was born a practising Muslim of Turkish origin. In essence, he is a Muslim German Turk whose parents are immigrants.

Mesut’s Ozil grandparents migrated through lands and seas from Turkey to Germany to get a better living in Germany’s Ruhr industrial heartland.

Ozil lived his life as a child in a very poor home. He was born during the period of the German industrial decline when the unemployment rate for migrants was over 70%.

Mesut Ozil Family Background:

His parents thus struggled from one low-paying job to another in a bid to keep the family moving.

His migrant neighbourhood was characterized by limited social mobility and several forsaken apartment blocks, which was an indication of poverty.

Despite these challenges, Mesut was determined to succeed. All the things he laid his hand on went well.

Starting from his academics to his quest to start playing football. Literally, Mesut used football as an escape route from poverty.

His love for football started when he started playing it on his favourite playground close to his home. Mesut Ozil, at an early age, became so obsessed with kicking a ball.

When he tried, he would take it home and sleep with it on his bed. He also spent much time watching his elder brother perform dribbles for him.

Driven by ambition, Mesut turned to football as an escape from poverty. He developed a deep passion for the game, playing locally and admiring his older brother's skills.

Growing up, he took lots of ball control lessons from his elder brother Mutlu, who only loved football for the fun of playing it. Mutlu never believed someone of his migrant status could make it in football.

Ideally, Mesut Ozil’s immigration neighbourhood (a scruffy suburb of around 16,000 inhabitants) was never seen as a breeding ground for talented footballers.

His determination to succeed has led to a success story that has inspired the German nation. He is regarded as the first national player from an immigrant background to have made it internationally.

Mesut Ozil Biography – Football Story:

Mesut Ozil decided to give soccer a shot as soon as he observed it was a sure way to get out of poverty.

He started out by participating in his school’s football, followed by developing his soccer skills alongside friends in the “Monkey Cage,” (a local pitch surrounded by fences) located in his migrant neighbourhood.

It was the ‘monkey cage’ where Ozil’s radar passing skills were first developed. This happened in the German Bismarck district of Gelsenkirchen.

Mesut Ozil would be there at the pitch ‘every day whether it be sun, snow or rain’, according to his older brother Mutlu.

The experience gained from the “Monkey Cage football” increased his chances of getting successful trials for a bigger team outside his migrant neighbourhood. First, he enrolled officially into his school’s elementary football team.

Mesut Ozil Bio – Road to Fame:

The German youngster progressed from youth level to semi-adult, which denotes the college football level. His secondary school, Gesamtschule Berger Feld, was the largest in Germany, with more than 1,400 students. This is a school attended by other notable footballers like Malick Thiaw, Leroy Sane, Thilo Kehrer, etc.

Joachen Herrmann, deputy head at Ozil’s secondary school, describes the young boy’s fascination with football as ‘a little bit autistic’, adding: ‘I always had the feeling he even took the ball to bed.’

From his college classroom window, Ozil could see the Veltins-Arena, Schalke’s home stadium.

The dreaming teenager had every reason to let his mind drift. As well as his precocious talent, the school has close links with the Bundesliga side.

The schoolboy, Ozil, was obsessed with football. Despite that, he was also intelligent at school. Manuel Neuer, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper, was also in the school.

He was a few years above Ozil, while Julian Draxler was lower. Benedikt Howedes and Joel Matip are also graduates of the school.

The school was forward in terms of football terms. They had lots of training activities: three sessions in the mornings, three in the evening and five times during the weekends.

Ozil was known as a reserved student, but in training and on match days, his personality changed.

‘When I saw Mesut for the first time, I had to check his age,’ says Krabbe, a school teacher. ‘he was very small, quiet, introverted off the pitch.

But on the football field, he was the extrovert, the very biggest player. He puffs out his chest for effect. “He was the superstar of our team.”.’

Success Story:

It was at the Gelsenkirchen College that Ozil recognized he would be successful through football.

He fought a lot of his personality issues as soon as he started getting much recognition. Mesut was known to be a very shy kid off the pitch.

His teacher once put it “Mesut was not the student that could face a crowd. He was always very shy.

But if you saw him on the pitch, he was another person because there he exploded. Give him a ball, and he would be somebody else.”

‘He was a shy weak little thing but could shoot 25 metres, run very fast and entered every contest for the ball,’ said school club coach Ralf Maraun.

Ralf Maraun continued … ‘He was a real street footballer. I remember once we won a game 12 goals to zero. Mesut scored 10. The other team’s coach took me aside and said, “Next time, please leave the migrant kid at home”.’

At College, the migrant boy from Bismarck became the most popular footballer. It didn’t take long before he got registered in the German football body for schools where he got his ID. This qualified him to participate in bigger competitions.

Mesut devoted every spare hour to nursing his life’s ambition. After succeeding, he did one thing everyone still remembers him to date. That is; share in his success with loved ones.
