Taking up football seriously, Jonny Evan’s parents decided to register him and their sons at Greenisland FC.

Thanks to their youth mentor, Mr Grattan who looked after the youngster when he turned out for Greenisland Football Club, Jonny Evans parent’s hard work paid off as their sons not only rose up the ranks but made Manchester United scouts come all the way from England to get them.

At the age of nine, Jonny Evans was invited to attend the Manchester United Centre of Excellence in Belfast, before being invited for a trial in Manchester a year later which he passed.

However, the Evans family soon relocated to Manchester, allowing Jonny and his brothers to train with Manchester United full-time.

Helen McConnell and Jonny Evans Love Story:

Being a journalist is all about using any means necessary to not only find the perfect story but to back it up with credible sources. For Helen McConnell, being a Man United TV journalist is all about finding the perfect story and perfect love which was found in the person of Jonny Evans.

Helen, a lifelong United fan, landed the job as a host on the Man United Television station after a stint freelance reporting on Irish League games and other sports. It was through her work with the station the former University of Ulster student first met Jonny Evans and both fell in love at first sight.

Their love was so strong that Whispers began circulating in sporting circles of the blossoming romance even months before Jonny and Helen officially announced they were dating.

Unlike many relationships between footballers and their girlfriends, both Helen and Jonny agreed not to live together until after they are married due to Helen’s strong religious beliefs. It is pertinent to note that her father Ken McConnell raised her as a devoted Christian and he himself is a Reverend.

Jonny and Helen will exchange vows at Clough Presbyterian Church, where her father Ken was the minister who made them joins hands together.

Both lovebirds were known to have a similar smile during their wedding which made them look very much alike for each other.

For Helen and Jonny, it was the most joyous day in their lives. The Man United-supporting clergyman, Rev Ken McConnell (Jony’s father in law) said he was delighted to be welcoming Jonny into his family.

In his words…

“Everything about Jonny towards us has been very respectful since he started seeing Helen. They are a very private couple, that’s the way they are. Jonny has a very supportive family network and he’s very close to his family. He’s very kind, very thoughtful, and we found that since the start. He’s an exceptionally nice lad and we’re very fond of him. You hear these things about footballers being all bling and flash with no substance, but that’s not the way Jonny is.”

Even the then coach of Man United, boss Sir Alex Ferguson was so delighted in Jonny. In his words; “Marriage helps footballers, I’ve always thought that. I’m an advocate of that.”

Thanks to his son’s progress, he now has the responsibility of identifying, recruiting and managing young players for his very own Murdock Sports Management.

CORRY EVANS and his wife, Lisa once apologised for the foul-mouthed xenophobic tweet she directed at the Romanian referee (Match official Ovidiu Hategan) who awarded a controversial penalty against her husband.
