For Biography starters, Dejan Lovren was born on the 5th day of July 1989. He came into this world through his Croatian parents, Silva Lovren (his mother) and Sasa Lovren, (his father).

 Dejan grew up in the city of Zenica, SFR Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Did you know that a 3-year-old Lovren and his family fled from Yugoslavia to Munich because of the Bosnian War? As a result, he spent the next seven years in Germany.

His childhood experience of escaping war is similar to those of Granit Xhaka, Luka Modric and Xherdan Shaqiri.

“I was a happy boy during my childhood days. Also, I spoke German perfectly. I went to school, I played for a little club.”

However, the family eventually had to leave, as they did not possess the necessary documentation to stay in Germany.

Dejan Lovren’s parents settled at Karlovac in Croatia, 50 kilometres southwest of Croatia’s capital city – Zagreb.

Lovren initially found settling in Croatia difficult and struggled in school for a couple of years because of his unfamiliarity with the Croatian language.

Lovren played for local teams NK Ilovac & NK Karlovac as a youth before joining GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2004 and grew up in their ranks.

In January 2010, he signed for French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais for €8 million-plus.

Lovren played for the club before moving to Southampton on the 14th day of June 2013, when he signed a four-year contract with the English side.

At this stage of his career, he would only dream of playing at a top premier league club. That dream came when he joined Liverpool on the 27th of July, 2014. The rest, as they say, is now history.

Starting off, Dejan Lovren met and fell in deep love with Anita at the age of 16. Over the years, they grew as a couple, leaning on each other and never giving up on each other.

Simply put, Dejan comes from a refugee family. He has always provided a searing insight into the fear his family had when they made a desperate 17-hour near-death overnight escape from war-torn Bosnia.

Dejan Lovren runs his palm down his face, the realities of that harrowing time are still so real, still so raw.

The pain never dissipates and the memories of being rendered a refugee through the Bosnian War resurfaces when he watches countless others, in similarly unthinkable situations, sacrificing everything for the smallest shot at survival.

It is Just like his story of fleeing Kraljeva Sutjeska as a three-year-old, with his Croatian parents Sasa and Silva, to escape the first genocide in Europe since World War II.

KEY LOSSES: Lovren and his parents left everything behind – their business, their friends, their everyday life – taking with them only a bag of clothes as they fled Zenica in his uncle’s small Yugo.

“I wish I could explain everything that happened,” Lovern said. “You hear so many stories, but nobody knows the real truth. It just happened.

It just changed everything through the night – war between everyone, between three different cultures [Muslim Bosniaks, Orthodox Serbs, Catholic Croats].

I just remember when the sirens went on. I scared me so much because I thought of ‘bombs’ that could explode anytime.
