Juan Guillermo Cuadrado Bello was born on the 26th day of May 1988 in Necoclí, Colombia.

The name Juan Cuadrado translates to John Square in English. Cuadrado was born to Marcela Bello Guerrero, his mother (a housekeeper), and the late Mr Guillermo Cuadrado, his father (a truck driver).

Juan was raised in Tumaco, Columbia. He grew up as a Manchester United fan. Juan Cuadrado’s father, Guillermo, was murdered by an armed gang when he was just four years old.

As ordered by his mum, poor Cuadrado hid under the bed when his truck driver’s dad was shot. It meant his mum, Marcela had to bravely try and raise him on her own. Guillermo’s murderers were never brought to justice.

Following the death of his father came civilian massacres linked to the country’s decades-old civil war.

Both Juan and his mother were later parted when she got a job managing an ice cream shop. She left her son with his football school teachers and his granny and sent him food she bought with her wages.

In a bid to put food on the table and save monies for her son’s future, Marcela also sold bananas after work. Also, after school, Juan would help his mum pack bananas to make ends meet. 

Little Juan was good at putting special export stickers on the bananas while his mum Marcela desperately tried to earn enough to put food on the table. Her job was to wash and pack the fruits.

Juan Cuadrado Biography Facts – Rising to Fame:

Perhaps the death of his dad made him grow up quicker. Childhood pals of Juan say football was an escape from the harsh realities of life for him in the early 1990s when violence among notorious Colombian drugs gangs was rife.

More so, his mum once stated in an interview that Juan had to be a perfect student in order to be able to play football which they saw as an option to get out of poverty.

A miracle came when Juan was 13. He moved 300 miles away from home after being scouted as a future soccer star at Athletico Uraba.

Cuadrado began his club career in Atlético Uraba, where his preferred position was as a forward.

However, on the recommendation of club founder Nelson Gallego, Cuadrado took on a midfielder role, usually as a winger.

Cuadrado’s confidence grew so high, which made him rise above all youth football ranks. This took him to the Colombian second-division club Rionegro, where he showcased more of his potential of being a world-class player. 

He was eventually signed by Medellin in 2008 which gave him the leap to European football. As of July 2014, Cuadrado lived with his family in Florence. The rest, as they say, is now history.

Marcela cooks Juan’s favourite lentil and chickpea stews. She also spends hours every month plaiting his hair. 

As Juan once put it: “She’s been both a mum and a dad to me.” She’s taught him important values, and the support she has given him has been fundamental.
