Salomon Armand Magloire Kalou was born on the 5 August 1985 in Oumé, Ivory Coast by parents Mr and Mrs Armand Magloire Kalou.

Kalou was a major beneficiary of the post-2002 World Cup grassroots football development programme in Côte d’Ivoire which saw many youth footballers plying to Europe.

Kalou followed his older brother’s footsteps. Like Bonaventure Kalou his elder brother, Kalou began his career in local club Mimosas before plying his trade in Europe. Auxerre coach Guy Roux wanted to sign him to unite him with his brother at the club, but Kalou opted to sign for Feyenoord instead in 2003. After returning from a short loan spell at Excelsior, Kalou played in the Dutch top flight Eredivisie for two seasons from 2004 to 2006 scoring 35 goals in 67 league appearances, also winning the Johan Cruijff Award in 2005.  This led to a call from Chelsea FC. Once upon a time, former Netherlands manager, Marco van Basten, encouraged Kalou to apply for a Dutch citizenship. He had never played for Cote d’Ivoire and had already experienced problems with their football authorities. Van Basten believed Kalou could make a difference to the national squad and was eager for the citizenship application to be made and accepted.

Kalou’ application was even backed by Dutch legend Johan Cruyff. Nonetheless, it was refused and, after a lengthy court case, Kalou gave up all hope of playing for the Netherlands. He has since played 51 games for Côte d’Ivoire.

Maybe this was because he played a more attacking role at Feyenoord, rather than his wider position at Chelsea. Or it may have been because the Dutch league is not as competitive as the Premier League.
