He was only one year old when his dad died and Josip Ilicic’s family lived through the pains and moved on. Thereafter, Josip mother fled with the remnants of the little family from the war-torn Bosnian city of Prijedor to the sporting hotbed of Kranj in Slovenia.

It was at the city of Kranj that Josip grew up playing football alongside his older brother  -Igor inside their house. The sport was an escape for the brothers especially Josip who had bad thoughts about the Bosnian war that made his family become refugees at Slovenia.

By the time Josip was 6-7 years old, he set his mind on following the footstep of his older brother by joining local club Triglav Kranj. Training at the club was a whole new world and experience for the youngster who was previously playing indoors.

Early Career Life

Subsequent football engagement saw Josip began playing for Bonifika Koper where he made his first-team debut. While playing Slovenian second division football for Bonifika, Josip didn’t shy from exhibiting his natural talents which caught the attention of Interblock.

When Josip eventually came to Interblock in 2008, he quickly set out to establish himself in the club by working his way up to become one of its best players and top prospects of Slovenian football.

Road to Fame Story

However, things began going south for Josip when Interblock suffered relegation during the 2009–10 season. Thereafter, Interblock made a number of changes that saw to the midfielder’s demotion to the club’s reserve team regardless of the fact that he was one of the best players.

Aged 21, Josip felt that he had already gotten enough of life’s frustrations and contemplated ending his playing career. Just a few weeks later, he got a life-changing phone call from Maribor which proposed signing him to the club.

Rise to Fame Story

Fortunate for Josip, he took the offer and went on to make a big impact at the club where he scored key goals in UEFA Europa League matches during his lone season with the club. Even when Josip began playing in Italy, he maintained his status as a reliable attacking midfielder beginning from Palermo to Fiorentina.

Fast forward to the time of writing Josip is rendering appreciable services at Atlanta, a club he joined in 2017 from Fiorentina. Teaming up with the club’s key players like Papu Gomez and Duvan Zapata, Josip helped saw the club to a historic 3rd place finish in the Serie A, earning the club a spot in the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time.
