Starting off, his full names are Karl Fredrik “Freddie” Ljungberg. Freddie Ljungberg as he is popularly called was born on the 16th day of April 1977 to his mother, Elisabeth Bodil Ljungberg and father, Roy Alve Erling Ljungberg, in Sweden, Western Europe.

Freddie has his family origin from a small Swedish municipality called Vittsjö (1,665 inhabitants in 2010). He spent the first 4 years of his life in his beautiful birthplace of Vittsjö alongside his parents and kid brother named Karl Oskar Filip Ljungberg.

Vittsjö is a beautiful Swedish municipality known in history to be the war site between Denmark, Norway &  Sweden who fought to claim its ownership. Family Background: Freddie, unlike Zlatan, was fortunate to grow up from an upper-class family background. Did you know?… His dad Roy Alve Erling is a rich civil engineer who later went into owning his construction and consultant business. Freddie Ljungberg’s mum Elisabeth Bodil Ljungberg is also a big shot in the Swedish Labor Department.

After living in Vittsjö 5 years, in the year 1982, Freddie Ljungberg’s parents left the municipality to settle in Halmstad, a richer city located at the mouth of the Nissan river, Swedish west coast. The family’s effort to leave Freddie’s birthplace of Vittsjö didn’t go well with Freddie Ljungberg. The tenacious 5-year-old kid who had fallen deeply in love with his birthplace didn’t want his entire family to leave the town for Halmstad. He argued with his rich parents who didn’t see many reasons for his decision to remain behind. They bundled him away from Vittsjöall all the way to Halmstad. Halmstad has been a loving Swedish city well-suited for bowling, golf, gymnastics, football, swimming, tennis, ice hockey, cricket and a host of other sports. While schooling as a child, Freddie developed a talent for handball. It got to a point when his handball talent was recognized by the Swedish national handball team, a development that saw Freddie being called to represent his country. Freddie Ljungberg’s parents never relented in a bid to see their son fulfill his sporting dreams. They supported him in his quest to get football education with Halmstads BK where he had a successful enrolment with the club’s youth setup coached by Olle Eriksson.

Freddie Ljungberg was quick to make an impression with the club. He impressed his youth coach Eriksson who once said the lad was remarkably more talented for his age. The Swedish born star was so good that he would sometimes be considerate of other players and on few occasions, even his opponents. Did you know?… young Ljungberg in his magnanimity would sometimes pass the ball to his friends so that they would have a chance to score.

At the age of 12 in the year In 1989, he was already been seeing as the future of Swedish football. In a bid to Fastrack his progress, Freddie tried convincing Halmstads BK to move him two steps up the youth ranks (from p12 to p14) which was against the club policy at the time.

He couldn’t be a Jack of all Trades: At 18, Ljungberg was already done with high school and was on the verge of ending his youth football. Even thou it was a point in his life that demanded ardent attention to one career, a tenacious Ljungberg still wanted to continue both university education and playing senior football. In fact, he got admission into the university where he began studying information technology and economics.

Soon, Ljungberg began to wear off. He realized he wasn’t a superhuman who could focus on both university stress and senior football at the same time. He struggled severally to striking a balance between his hectic academic timetable with the physically demanding commitment of being a professional footballer. After consulting with his family members, the workaholic decided to quit university to concentrate on football. 

Ljungberg after abandoning his university education went on to make his senior debut on 23 October 1994. Barely a year into his professional debut, the talented Swedish began impressing his bosses. He went on to help Halmstad win the Svenska Cupen in 1995 and the Allsvenskan (Swedish professional league title) in the year 1997.

Freddie’s impressive role in winning the Swedish professional league saw a host of foreign clubs; the likes of FC Barcelona, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Parma and Arsenal all begging for his signature.

Ljungberg in no time proved himself with Arsenal without difficulty as he immediately began flying down the wings of Highbury. It took no time before he became a cult hero at the club. Freddie’s best moment for the Arsenal came when he helped the club win their second Premier League and FA Cup double and also, becoming part of the Arsenal 2003-04 ‘Invincibles’ Squad, More importantly, the Arsenal golden boy became the record holder of the 2001/2002 Premier League Player of the Season award.

At the time he retired, the Arsenal legend had won the Swedish midfielder of the year 5 times in a row (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005). He also won the Swedish player of the year (2002 & 2006) and was placed 11th in’s Gunners’ Greatest 50 Players.

Following his retirement, Ljungberg’s love for education saw him taking up coaching education where he also excelled. On 12 July 2016, he joined Arsenal’s Academy coaching the club’s Under-15s. Freddie met the love of his life Natalie Foster (No:8) in 2007, the year he left Arsenal for Westham. The girlfriend who later became a wife also comes from a rich home. Did you know? Natalie is the daughter of a business executive and famous London taxi tycoon Daryl Foster. Just like Freddie, she is also a ‘socialite‘- well known in the British fashionable society.

Freddie Ljungberg Tattoos: Did you know?… Freddie was among the generation of footballers who began to embrace body art in the late 90s and early 2000s. Back then, the Swedish loves to flaunt his black cat tattoo on his hip while he modeled with his pants. This tattoo which was designed in Los Angelos reportedly took eight hours to finish. As observed below, he also has another LA designed tattoo which displays his religion (Christianity) on his arm.

He once suspected he had HIV-AIDS: Around 2005, Freddie began missing vital games due to a persistent hip injury. After suspecting he must have contracted a disease, he went on to have series of tests (including aids and cancer) in order to find the cause of his problems. Shockingly, he was diagnosed with having a rare reaction to one of his tattoos. Freddie did a hip surgery to remove the inflamed gland from his body. In his words according to thesun;

“I was frightened. I was tested severally, but nobody, even myself seemed to know what was wrong with me.

I was very worried. I did not feel sick or ill, but of course, I knew i was injured inside. Eventually, the doctors found out that there was something in my tattoos. I was relieved that they  fixed the problem… I am fine now.”

National Records: Did you know?… Ljungberg was the first player to score a goal at an FA Cup final outside England. He also became the first player in 40 years to score in consecutive FA Cup Finals. The last time the media got hold of his family was more than a decade ago, a time his dad got into some trouble. Precisely on the 19th of July, 2008, Freddie Ljungberg’s father was accused of r*pe and se*ual harassment. This was a piece of bad news that got the Arsenal legend devastated (TheMirror 2008 report). Roy was arrested at the family home in Sweden and spent three nights in Halmstad police custody before being released.
