Douglas Costa Childhood Story – Early Life and Family Background:

For Biography starters, Douglas Costa de Souza was born on the 14th day of September 1990 to his mother, Marlene Costa de Souza and father, Antônio Valmor de Souza in the municipality of Sapucaia do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Douglas was born in the Sinos Valley to a hard-working Brazilian family. Before turning to a mechanic, his father once played soccer but never made the cut to play professionally.

From an ordinary Mechanic, Antonio later worked as an industrial mechanic when he moved his family to Esteio, a municipality situated in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Before Douglas Costa’s birth, his family dreamt of having a footballer’s son. Upon his birth, he was named ‘Douglas’ after Maicon Douglas Sisenando, whom the family idolized for their son.

His father believed his son would “stand out” in his local footballing, and his dreams finally came to pass. As Costa once put it;

“My mother told me that I tried to play football inside her while she was pregnant.

So, when my parents learned they had a boy, they had no doubt I would be a football player.

I remember myself always kicking a ball. A ball was my favourite toy. I can’t do anything else. I don’t even know how to dance Samba.”

Douglas Costa Biography – Rising to Fame:

At age 9, when his family moved to Esteio, Douglas started playing football at the futsal courts, which belong to his dad’s place of work. There were other kids there whose parents also worked at the company.

In other to showcase his talent to a much wider audience, Douglas Costa joined Novo Hamburgo, where he caught the attention of scouts from the local league club, Grêmio which is based in the state capital, Porto Alegre. Grêmio signed him at the tender age of 11.

At some point, while playing for the club, things were not easy for “The Flash“. Despite his technical prowess, his slender physique led Grêmio cause issues between him and the club in 2002.

Unfortunately, Grêmio decided to give the Costa time on loan to develop somewhere else. He was sent on loan to neighbouring Casa-Lar Santa Catarina. This act by his club got him and his parents upset.

Grêmio later regretted that decision when they met Douglas Costa’s team, Casa-Lar in a tournament. According to Grêmio’s assistant coach at the time, Costa taunted the boys on his parent club saying;

“When I catch you, I’ll cut inside and eliminate you in the competition!”

On the eve of the game, Grêmio’s coach even remarked,

“We’d better be careful since Douglas wants to play!”

He was right: the next day Costa scored two goals for Casa-Lar, eliminating Grêmio from the competition. After scoring, he immediately ran over to Grêmio’s coach and shouted,

“I told you, you should have allowed me stay!”

The coach was not amused, but Costa’s time with Casa-Lar swiftly came to an end, as Grêmio brought him back and he started making them win tournaments.

Beginning a lifelong obsession with physical training, Costa gained muscle mass, eventually putting on 8 kg (= 17.6 lb) in no time, which continued till Grêmio was satisfied with his build.

In 2008, he joined the starting lineup of Grêmio’s first team, scoring where he became their best player. International suitors soon came calling, among them Sir Alex Ferguson himself.

The Manchester United legend attempted to acquire Costa in 2009. Back then, Sir Alex considered Costa the brightest young star in South America at the time, but Man United could not cut a deal with Grêmio.

They offered £7 million with performance-related add-ons, but Grêmio, in serious financial trouble at the time, demanded a whopping £21 million.

Instead, in January 2010, Grêmio reached a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk, where he went on to shine. The rest, as they say, is history.

Luisa Ramos has been with Douglas Costa right from his youthful days in Brazil. She has been him during his highs and lows at his youth club.

Luisa even followed him from Brazil to Ukraine. Having dated for so long, both lovers decided to get married in June 2014.

Both had remained discreet about their private life since marriage. Douglas Costa feeds many photos on his Instagram account without posting pictures of his wife. 

The two lovers apparently chose to live with the famous formula “live happily, live hidden”. The best time media had a better of the couple was at Oktoberfest (A 16- to 18-day world’s largest Volksfest held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany) pictured below.

While many thought their marriage was healthy, the opposite was the case. Their marriage, however, lasted little more than a year. Costa and Lusia Ramos had a divorce.

Painfully, he attended Bayern Oktoberfest as one of the bachelors. However, he wasn’t alone. Costa brought his beloved sister Amanda to Oktoberfest.

Costa has said about his divorce, “That’s life. Sometimes things just happen whether you want them to or not”

Douglas Costa is devoted to his family. He is close to his mother, Marlene Costa. As for his father, their relationship is very complex, and we’ll make you know why.

Costa’s father was and remained an important source of motivation for his son. Antônio Valmor de Souza not only destined Costa for a soccer career with his name.

It was his father’s great passion, who unfortunately couldn’t become a professional, that drove and spurred him on.

Costa has once revealed a dark side to his relationship with his father in his words below;

“He always said that if I wanted to play soccer, I couldn’t drink, I couldn’t smoke . . . He gave me advice that he himself didn’t follow, as he used to drink alcohol, he smoked. He used to say, ‘If you wanna play soccer, you can’t do that stuff’”.

In fact, Costa’s father had a serious drinking problem throughout the time he struggled to make a name for himself at his youth club, Grêmio.

“The main reason why I have neither smoked nor drunk alcohol was that I saw how alcohol and drugs destroy many things. I experienced that in my own family”.

 
The Turn Around: Fortunately, his father stopped years ago after seeing the level of destruction his bad habits made to his family. He hasn’t had a drop for years now. Antônio Valmor de Souza’s change in his habit was miraculous.
 
He never needed or used any therapy. He just saw himself doing something wrong and decided to change permanently. Below is a photo of both father and son playing snooker together. Douglas was taught how to play snooker by his father.
 

About Douglas Costa’s Siblings: 

Douglas Costa has an older brother and two younger sisters, Vitória and Amanda Costa. He is very close to his little sister Amanda, who currently lives with him at the time of writing.
 
“We complete each other,” Costa says in a recent Facebook documentary. Douglas and Amanda Costa frequently appear on each other’s Instagram accounts. They are indeed very close.
