Alan Shearer was born on the 13th day of August 1970 in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He was born to his mother, Anne Shearer and father, Alan Shearer Snr (a sheet-metal worker). Both were working-class parents.

Shearer was encouraged to play football by his father while he was in school which he did.  He was educated at Gosforth Central Middle School and Gosforth High School. Growing up playing on the streets of his hometown, Shearer originally played in midfield because so he could not face competition and thus, get more involved in games.

He grew up the ranks in his school football and became a captain of the school team. His breakthrough came when he helped a Newcastle City Schools team win a seven-a-side tournament at St James’ Park. This led him to take football more seriously, thus signing for Wallsend Boys Club as a teenager.

It was while playing for the Wallsend club that he was spotted by Jack Hixon who was a scout for Southampton. Jack Hixon felt adamant on Shearer. He was forced to recommend him for Southampton after seeing Shearer having successful trials a for First Division clubs West Bromwich Albion, Manchester City and Newcastle United. Shearer is married to Lainya, whom he met whilst a Southampton player.

The couple lived locally with her parents during Shearer’s second year at the south coast club, and were married on 8 June 1991 at St. James’ Church in the city.

In contrast to the portrayal of some WAGs (wives and girlfriends) of later players by the media, Lainya is described by Shearer as a quiet and reserved person, not comfortable in the spotlight her husband’s fame sometimes brought.

Former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd announced that, after Shearer finished the 2005–06 season as Newcastle’s caretaker assistant manager, he would become the club’s “Sporting Ambassador” for the 2006–07 season.

Post-retirement, Shearer has been best known for his work as a pundit on the BBC’s Match of the Day. The former striker is one of the most prominent faces on the Saturday night highlights show and also appears as an analyst for FA Cup, European Championship and World Cup games.

Shearer has once been criticised for his lack of insight in his early years as a pundit but has earned a warmer reception of late, which he puts down to discarding his ambition to go into management. “When I first went into [punditry] in 2006, I always felt that I was going to go back into management so I was reluctant to criticise as much as I probably should’ve,” he told Off The Ball.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Shearer’s net worth was £36m in 2013.

On top of his earnings from his playing days, Shearer’s previous contract with the BBC as a pundit on Match of the Day reportedly paid him £500,000 a year. He signed a new deal in 2016 and has also appeared on other networks abroad, such as Bein Sports.

Also, an endorsement arrangement with Umbro that ran beyond the end of his playing career saw Shearer pocket £1.33m annually until it expired in 2013.
